Abstract

Writing is one of the most important skills in the English language that students must master at school, while the eleventh grade students of Madrasah Aliyah Al Amiriyyah still had problems in writing, especially in writing invitation letters, most of them were not understand well about part of invitation letter and to design their sentences. Besides they were also less vocabulary in writing invitation letter. So the aim of research is to describe student's ability in writing an invitation letter at the eleventh grade students of Madrasah Aliyah Al Amiriyyah Blokagung Banyuwangi. The method in this research is descriptive qualitative. The data was taken from the results of the researcher's observations on the learning carried out in class, especially on the invitation letter material. The results of the analysis of students' writing skills on an invitation letter are that three students are included in the sufficient category with scores obtained 64, 66, 62 and one student is included in the good category with a score of 75. This indicates that the writing ability of the eleventh grade students of MA Al Amiriyyah on an invitation letter is still low and there is a need for improvement in better writing learning methods.

Abstract

This research aimed to know the strategies used and the problems faced by the teachers in teaching writing by online at SMK PGRI 2 Giri Banyuwangi. The scope of this study is to analyze teaching writing by online during covid-19 pandemic at SMK PGRI 2 Giri Banyuwangi and limit only to the strategy used in teaching writing by online during covid-19 pandemic. This study used qualitative research. The subjects of the research are three of English teachers at SMK PGRI 2 Giri Banyuwangi. The instruments used to collect the data is an interview. The technique of data analysis which used in this research is interactive model of analysis from Miles and Huberman. They are: reducing the data, display the data and drawing and verifying conclusion. The finding of the research showed the respodents use two teaching writing strategies during pandemic, those are teacher presentation and self-awareness exercises / tests (Large and Small Group Discussion). The teachers deliver the material using presentation by Zoom and then share and collect the task in Google Classroom. In certain condition, students can come to the school for doing small group discussion with the teachers directly. Therefore, there are three problems faced by teacher during teaching writing by online, there are internet connection, students’ lack of interest and inappropriate teaching strategy.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to learn about students' pronunciation skills, particularly in pronouncing short and long vowels. The research was descriptive quantitative in nature. The eight grade students, a total of 30 kids, are the focus of this study. The information is gathered using an oral test. The data was quantitatively analyzed to determine the percentage of students who scored well on pronunciation. The largest inaccuracy in the pupils' pronunciation was / æ /, which had a total percentage of 63,33% and was classed as moderate. To avoid mispronounce, the researcher proposed that teachers provide students the exact pronunciations. Students should practice more by using an online dictionary or other resources to assist them enhance their pronunciation skills.

Abstract

This research is a descriptive study of students’ mastery using descriptive quantative approach. This research aimed to know the Seventh grade students’ mastery on preposition at MTs Maulana Ishaq Kabat in the Academic Year 2020/2021. The researcher used test and documentation to collect the data. The indicators of the test were divided into two part; indicators of preposition of time and preposition of place. The data were analyzed bby Donald’s formula. The researcher used the The Classification of The Score Level by Depdikbud (1995). The results of the research show that the score of the seventh grade students’ mastery on using preposition of time was 47,6%. Then, the classification of the students’ mastery on using preposition of time was categorized as “poor”. Since, the score of the seventh grade students’ mastery on using preposition of place was 54,5%. Then, the classification of the students’ mastery on using preposition of place was categorized as “poor”. Therefore, the average score for preposition of time and preposition of place were 51,5% and it concluded that classification of students’ ability on using preposition was “poor”.

Abstract

Figurative language is language used to express something beyond the literal meaning. There are thirteen types of figurative language used in this research, namely simile, methapor, personification, hyperbole, euphemism, symbolism, repetition, irony, sarcasm, paradox, antithesis, idioms and imagery. This research focuses in analysing the types of figurative language found on the song lyrics “You are My Sunshine”. The objective of the research is to know what the types of figurative language used on the Song Lyrics “You are My Sunshine” by Anne Murray and how the types of figurative language used on the Song Lyrics “You are My Sunshine” by Anne Murray. In this research, researchers used a descriptive qualitative method in analyzing data in the song lyrics. In collecting data, the research identified and classified the types of figurative language in the song lyrics. In analysis data, the research reads song lyrics, determines types of figurative language in song lyrics, sorting song lyrics to put into types of figurative language, conclusion. The results of the research found nine types of figurative language with a total of each types of figurative language, namely, methapor (3), hyperbloe (1), symbolism (1), repetition (1), idiom (2), imagery (1). From thirteen types of figurative language used in the song lyrics, nine types of figurative language are used in the song lyrics and four types of figurative language are not used in the song lyrics. Types of figurative language that is not in the song lyrics, because the sentence song lyrics is ordinary language sentence.

Abstract

This research is a descriptive study of students motivation using descriptive quantative approach. This research aimed to know the student motivation in learning English on the tenth year student In the Midst of Covid-19 at MAU (Featured Islamic School) Ihya’ Ulumiddin Singojuruh academic year 2020-2021. The researcher used questionnaire to collect the data. The indicators of the questionnaire were divided into two part; indicators of integrative and instrumental motivations. The researcher used the Likert scale with four alternative answers, those are strongly agree, agree, disagree and strongly disagree. The researcher analyzed the data of questionnaires by formula : P = n/N x 100%. The research results that the students’ integrative motivation in learning English is categorized as very high motivation and the students’ instrumental motivation is categorized as very high motivation.

Abstract

This research is a descriptive study on the use of politeness strategy in movie. The researcher used a descriptive qualitative approach. This research focused on describing politeness strategies used by the main characters of Aladdin movie. The data were analyzed from conversation script in form of utterance. The researchers used analysis method by Miles and Huberman, namely data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The research results showed that the types of politeness strategies used by the four main characters in the film Aladdin are the bald-on record strategy, positive politeness strategies, negative politeness strategies, and off-record strategies. Bald on record is the most widely used. It appeared 11 times (37%). It is followed by positive politeness which are uttered 7 times (23%) and off record which are also uttered 7 times (23%). The forth is negative politeness that uttered 5 times (17%). The researcher suggest to the English teachers to use Aladdin movie as teaching resource for politeness strategy. The researcher also suggested to the students could apply the politeness strategy in their life especially with the teachers and mates during learning process. For the further researcher, there are many aspects which can be analyzed about Pragmatics including politeness strategy. The reseracher suggests to the other researchers to analyze other aspects of Pragmatics in different works.

Abstract

Speaking interactive is one type of speaking that has long duration in conversation. This research aimed to find the problem and the problem solving in speaking interactive of student in SMK 17 Agustus 1945 Cluring. The research design was descriptive qualitative. The respondents were 136 which determined by using random sampling. The data were taken by using online system of questionnaire and interview. The data from questionnaire was analysed by using Likert scale. The data analysis was determined based on theory linguistics problem and non-linguistic problem. There are 3 problems in linguistic and there are 5 problems in non-linguistic. Analysis questionnaire and interview data showed that students at SMK 17 Agustus 1945 Cluring have high problem in speaking interactive. The type of speaking interactive problems had by students showed the percentage score of each indicator are 63% in speaking interactive problem, 62% in lack of grammar, 67% lack of vocabulary, 73% lack of pronunciation, 62% in lack of confident, 65% little talking time, 51% in lack of motivation, 61% in lack of listening skill, and 62% in lack of giving feedback. Based on the data result, the problem solving that is suitable in speaking interactive is having interactive conversation through Small Talk, Ome-Tv, and watching YouTube channel continuously in daily life.

Abstract

This research is a descriptive study of teachers’ perception using descriptive-qualitative. This research airmed to describe teachers’ perception on the use of Disney movies as English language teaching media for young learners. The researcher used interview to collect the data. There are three activities for the analysis of data, namely: data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing. The research results that the teachers mostly gave positive perception about the use of Frozen II as ELT media. They perceived Frozen II as suitable and recommended ELT media in teaching listening for young learners since it fulfills 4 functions of ELT media, namely; a) attentive, b) affective, c) cognitive, and d) compensatory functions. Therefore, there are some benefits of using Frozen II as ELT Media for young learners. First, students’ learning enthusiasm will increase. Second, Frozen II is appropriate ELT media that make the lesson clearer. Third, the use of Frozen II as ELT media avoid students’ boredom. Forth, by using Frozen II students can do different learning activities than usual.

Abstract

Writing is become the one of difficult skill to learn especially in EFL context. Students have problems when formulating words while doing writing assignments. This very important to investigate student problem while do writing especially on lexical choice that student utilize in writing descriptive. The corpus can also be used for examines sentence writing structure and word selection that can be seen and synchronized very effectively. The importance of this research is to be able to know the capacity of students when doing writing task and how their writing product can be better. it can be ascertained that from student writing samples that have been analyzed, there are 10.2% high frequency, 2.5% mid frequency, and 87.3% low frequency. This identifies that in writing students still tend to use familiar words to make a sentence. Based on the aspects of discovery that have been mentioned, students' ability to write still needs to be improved again, especially in the selection of several adjectives and pronouns.
